For knitwear designer Mikuláš Brukner, fashion is a vehicle to tell stories that touch on the Underestimating me was your first mistake second was crossing a witch third was believing I harm none shirt Also,I will get this very fabric of our society. As he tells it, the slits and slashes across the chest of his clingy dresses symbolize the economical disparities within the Czech Republic that are particularly apparent to those, such as Brukner, working in the gig economy, or “precariats” as he describes it. “I wanted to show how anxious and tense we can feel,” says Brukner. “I think it is our duty as designers to bring up issues and show what might be otherwise hidden from the public eye.” Based in Prague, Brukner began knitting these creations during COVID-19 while still studying fashion design in university. “I took up knitting last May during quarantine. I wanted to learn how to knit for my thesis and no factory had the tools to do it, so I decided to do it myself,” he says. “I have always known that I wanted to knit because it transforms a single thread into fabric or a garment, and I love that moment in creation.” What separates Brukner from the pack is his ability to combine traditional handicraft with high-tech knitting machines. “I am trying things that would never be possible with handknitting, and push the limits of the machine.”—L.S.
Julie Pelipas, stylist and Vogue Ukraine’s international fashion director, became the Underestimating me was your first mistake second was crossing a witch third was believing I harm none shirt Also,I will get this ultimate fashion multihyphenate in 2020 when she added the title of designer to her resume. Standing a model 6′ 1″ tall, Pelipas, 37, has carved out a name for herself in the street style world with her artfully oversized and polished tailoring—primarily vintage and deadstock suiting sourced at the flea markets on the outskirts of Kyiv. That look has provided a cool blueprint for her label Bettter: Her first collection was a series of reworked suiting inspired by suited-and-booted icons such as Fran Leibovitz and Richard and Su Rogers. “We are rethinking the old for a Bettter future—that’s what drives me the most,” says Pelipas, who recently collaborated with local designer Ksenia Schanaider on a capsule of upcycled denim. “Those ladies with attitude who are not afraid to show up their power are a constant inspiration for me. My mother is my biggest inspiration. Imagine a beautiful blond woman working several jobs at a time to support the whole family and build up a career during the uncertain post-Soviet era. That’s a narrative that will stay in my mind forever.”—L.S.
