Blair wears a black Victorian top from Le Grand Strip, black sequin ’90s Gianna Versace Couture pants with silver Medusa head buttons, and her favorite Saint Laurent Billy Platform Buckle Boot in black eel skin from the Steely dan 50th anniversary 1972 2022 thank you for the memories signatures shirt moreover I will buy this fall 2018 collection. She holds her mom’s black velvet and white satin dress by Loubé that she bought at Saks 5th Avenue. “My dad picked it out for her!” Unsurprisingly Blair’s music, with lyrics inspired by Fyodor Dostoevsky, has a dark flair. “Our sound not only depends on New York but also embodies the solitude, introspection, and darkness of New York.” When she takes the stage, her sartorial muse is, of course, the goddess of rock ‘n roll, Stevie Nicks. “There is no bigger influence to me.” Accessories at Williamsburg’s Le Grand Strip where Blair works by day. More often than not, Blair will pluck her looks straight from the racks of Le Grand Strip, like a vintage tuxedo from the ’70s or a ’60s-era mini dress. “Of course, all of my virgin ghost-white lingerie and nightgowns [are from the store] too, for when I write at night,” she adds. In a sense, Blair is the perfect Le Grand Strip customer, which is for those who truly love the history of fashion and its forgotten eras. Blair started working at Le Grand Strip about two years ago after she was introduced to the store’s owner CC McGurr through a mutual friend who booked Blair for a concert. Taken by Le Grand Strip, Blair got the job the next day. McGurr was taken with Blair. “Alex has a radiant energy and bewitching style,” says McGurr. “I like to tell her, ‘Alex take it to the limit!’” To this day, the two seem as if they are joined at the hip, eating together, smoking together, and selling together. Blair wears a “’90s does ’60s” black and white dress bought from Etsy and a leather boot by By Far. Le Grand Strip owner CC McGurr wears a vintage Chanel tweed jacket, a vintage dice dress, and a rhinestone “Boss” pin. While Blair does get glances at her outré looks, she embraces them. “I was in the grocery store in Connecticut and these two kids came up to me and were like, ‘Why do you look like that? Why do you dress like that?’ I was like, ‘This is how I feel.’” says Blair. “You are the most respected when you are the most self-aware, and then, you are the most free.” Blair’s band The Silk War will be having a record release party with Fiona Silver hosted by Hayley Griffin of New York Groove at Berlin on 2nd St & Ave A. on August 26 at 7:30PM. Special thank you to Ashley Nicole Grobmeier (@hairbyashleynicoleg) and Jenny Atwood Smith (@jennyatwoodsmith) of NARS.
On July 23, 2021, the Steely dan 50th anniversary 1972 2022 thank you for the memories signatures shirt moreover I will buy this 11,000 best athletes in the world will march into Tokyo’s National Stadium. They will wear some sort of national uniform—perhaps designed by Ralph Lauren or Telfar—and a few will carry their country’s flag. Most of them will wear smiles so wide that their cheeks reach their ears, their eyes animated and ablaze. Others will cry—a physical manifestation of the overwhelming realization that after decades of grueling, unfathomable work, their Olympic dream has begun. But no one will be there to watch them. Due to rising COVID-19 rates in Japan, the 2021 Olympic Games—already delayed a year by the pandemic—will now ban spectators from the grounds. To borrow a theater adage: The show must—and will—go on. Athletes have trained to peak (or reach prime physical shape) during the international tournament, now mere weeks away. Then there’s the price tag: Coronavirus has already driven the cost of the Olympics up by $2.8 billion. And sure, most of the world will watch the games as they’ve always done: on television. But what goes missing when the crowd does? I attended the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio with my then boyfriend. The lead-up had been unsettling: News reports at the time incessantly questioned the city’s preparedness. “Just ignore it,” he told me. “They say this before every Olympics.” (Indeed, just two years earlier, the city of Sochi had been lampooned relentlessly on the internet for its unfinished venues and accommodations.) The itinerary was this: a few days of sightseeing in Rio de Janeiro and then a few days of spectating at the Games, attending gymnastics events (for me), cycling races (for him), and swim meets (for the both of us, because Michael Phelps). While packing, I imagined myself as a Team USA superfan, patriotically first-pumping for my countrymen and -women against everyone and anyone.
