It is a scientifically proven fact that there’s nothing cooler than skateboarding, especially when girls do it. (Hello, Betty.) Parents may dispute this truth, offering injury statistics and knee pads, but come on…what’s more badass than seeing a young woman dominate on her board, particularly in a sport that has often been seen as the Soccer this is my world shirt but in fact I love this province of men? Oh, wait, I know; it’s seeing a 13-year-old dominate, as Japanese skateboarder Momiji Nishiya did at the Olympics on Monday. Nishiya faced off against another 13-year-old girl, Rayssa Leal of Brazil, in the women’s street competition, and while the competition was tough, Nishiya ended up landing her three final tricks perfectly and taking home the gold. She’s not the youngest gold medalist ever—that would be the diver Marjorie Gestring, who was a slightly younger 13 when she competed at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin—but Nishiya is part of a dazzling contingent of youth at the Tokyo Games, where five of the six youngest athletes are all skateboarders. Nishiya’s status as the Olympics’ first women’s skateboarding champion could hopefully empower a whole new generation of girls to pick up skateboards, or to try out whatever sport or activity they’ve been socialized to avoid on the grounds that it’s “for boys.” With athletes like Nishiya, Britain’s Sky Brown—who just turned 13—and the 14-year-old Chinese diver Quang Hongchan out there, girls could feel more inspired by this Olympics than any one that’s come before. As for this decidedly nonathletic adult, I’ll just be sitting here comparing my accomplishments to those of this group of ultrapowerful, ultracool teens (and coming up extremely short).
Anyone with a body that falls outside of the Soccer this is my world shirt but in fact I love this fashion industry’s punishing norm knows how painful shopping for swimwear can be. Elsesser is known for pushing fashion to become more inclusive, and this new collection—for which Mayan Toledano photographed a down-to-earth campaign in upstate New York—is a perfect encapsulation of her efforts. “I think the swimwear industry is reflective of the fashion industry, which ultimately sends messages like, ‘This is what’s flattering, so this is what you have permission to wear'”, says Elsesser. “While the swimwear industry has exploded in the last two years, it did feel like there was a decline in swimwear that was cool and passable and chunky-girl-friendly. Shay and Paula and I are friends, and because of our relationship, we were able to really walk through all the steps of what might feel good on a range of body types.”
